When commenting on a post, you may notice a drop-down menu that looks like this:

Blogger, the blogging software we use, requires you to select a profile in order to comment. Clicking that drop-down menu gives you the following options to use to sign in:

To comment without signing into an account:
Choose the Name/URL option in the drop down menu. The following window will appear.

Enter your name in the "Name" field. In the URL field, you may wish to enter the name of your personal website or blog. Othewise, you can leave it blank and click continue. Your comment will then be posted.

To comment with an existing account:

If you already have an account with any of these services (Google's Gmail, AOL Instant Messenger, etc.) you may wish you use your login information for that service to comment on the blog.

English Standard Version (ESV)

The word keep is used 11 times in chapters 2,3 and 5 of 1 John (ESV). As you read through 1 John this week make two lists. One: what we should keep doing. Two: what should we keep from doing?

New International Version (NIV)

The NIV does not use keep as a translation as frequently as the ESV. The translators of the NIV chose words like does, continue and obey more often than keep (1 John 2.3-5. 3.22-24). Though sometimes it will use the word keep (1 John 3.6, 5.21). Look at each chapter and keep two lists. One: What should we continue to do? What should we continue to avoid doing?

Sin, Chapter 4

In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his son to be the propitiation for our sins. When we are trudging through the difficulties and disappointments of life and feel like God is far from us, we would do well to remember this verse. God loved(s) us when we were far from him. He loved us enough to offer his only son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. God sacrificially [i.e. propitiation] loves us. Meditate on God's love. Then go love like God.

Sin, Chapter 3

You know that he appeared to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. John is devastatingly clear - if we share in God, we will not continue in sin. God help us, in the power of your Holy Spirit, through Jesus' cleansing work, to leave our sin behind.

In 2.1 he says he is writing so that we might not sin. Yet, he insists that we have sinned (1.8 and 1.10) and may very well continue to sin (2.1b). I think he desperately wants us to stay out of the filth that Jesus has cleaned out of us. "You are clean, why are you going back into the muck?" Logically, this makes great sense. But who isn't tempted by the stuff in 2.15-17?

In 1:8, if we claim to be without sin - that means we are claiming to be like God (1.5). Where else in the Bible is "darkness" associated with "sin"?

Get to know God through the book of 1 John. The fabric of 1 John is made up of keywords that are like threads which run throughout the book. Below are three simple steps that can have a profound impact.

1. Read.
Try reading one chapter a day, five days a week and while you read, focus on one keyword throughout the week.

2. Pray.
Praise and thank God for what this chapter says about Him. Confess sins. Ask God to bring this Scripture back to our minds through the day.

3. Write.
Get the most out of your reading by writing down what you learn from each chapter. You can do this on your own or online at faithon44th.com/study where you can also see what other people are gleaning.
