It seems to me that 1:8 and 1:10 are saying your living a lie. You are in denial about your situation, and until you can admit your sin, there isn't much help for you.
Good point, Bill. In verse 9, he contrasts saying we haven't sinned with confessing our sins and receiving forgiveness. It seems like it would be hard to receive forgiveness from God when you really don't feel like you need it.
To put it another way, it's hard to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior when you don't feel like you need any saving.
